At long last, it is very noteworthy to take note of that United States binds make inconceivable penances to spare their nation. Social Analysis This book patron enlivens the dread and demolition of a combat area. The destitution, ailment, and wrongdoing are evident and agonizing to watch. Any discernment that the US military has adjusted their perspective and spared Iraq will require to be reconsidered once general society gets the genuine realities of what's going on and that individuals are enduring now like never before previously. A portion of the games that protect these individuals are cards and computer games, among others. The United States patriotism adheres to a point of view on general feeling by making dread through the different media houses. What human issues form the subjects of the work Did you find any of them particularly well handled Essay Example

What human issues structure the subjects of the work? Did you discover any of them especially all around took care of? Exposition The Sporting Spirit typifies senses, pride, appearances, patriotism, imagery, social personality, and human affinities as center issues that incite the gravity of the article; â€Å"savage† impulses coagulate with patriotism and appearances to cultivate one’s pride, representing the proudness of being named by one’s nation †American, British, Russian, or something else. Pride encourages eagerness, which disinters the requirement for war †either truly or allegorically. Orwell passes on representative war in his article, The Sporting Spirit, portraying sports as a methods for a fight between observers, between two countries. It is where you either lose or win; there is no other option. â€Å"Sport is honestly emulate warfare,† George Orwell says. Orwell addresses numerous human issues as subjects, yet centers around contrasts of networks, observers, and countries to explain his feeling, adding to his credibility. In section seven, Orwell separates among urban and rural networks, and how they see sports. Sports give idealism to individuals in urban social orders †enormous towns †as an approach to meander from their stationary life. The phrasing of â€Å"sedentary† creates this atmosphere of inertness, which differentiates the topic of â€Å"savage† observers †onlookers who are vigorous to win through fierce ways. Orwell even depicts the individuals who accept games unite countries as a cutting edge religion. This critical utilization of â€Å"cult† †a gathering or an arrangement of strict conviction †depicts the dull funniness Orwell uses to unobtrusively taunt those perspectives. Orwell addresses human issues of separation in the initial two sections. He uncovers what numerous â€Å"thinking† individuals have saved furtive for such a long time †that game varieties malevolence. Game animosity is a typical wonder these days; Orwell arranges groups as â€Å"Dynamo,† â€Å"Russian,† or â€Å"British,† making the peruser intentional the names observers use so as to relate to their group. The style of Orwell †â€Å"†¦ I am told by someone,† and â€Å"†¦ another person educates me† †mean how his supposition isn't bound to only him, yet rather that others share it also. Social distinguishi ng proof is one of the key human issues passed on in the article. Orwell says that sports make new enmity on the two sides. The word usage of â€Å"animosity† depicts the loathe of observers to each other as intense aversion reared from the ethics and contrasts of each other. This is one of the human issues Orwell can pass on grandly. The proclamation that sports make positive attitude between the countries is an incredible misnomer since it is sport that represents the serious idea of people and their requirement for characterization. People look for pride, and they love force and mastery. That is the reason sport is war †it is about the misfortune, just as the increase. (What one gains, the different loses.) Spectators can infer contrasts of races, nations, or political inclinations as a gathering, and either boo the ref, or sing hostile tunes that corrupt the other group just as their onlookers to show their decisions. Orwell hints that intensity doesn't manufacture character. Best case scenario, it deceives it. Even from a pessimistic standpoint, it debases it. It isn't only the players who are ruined; it is additionally the observers. The symbolism of a combat zone delineate Orwell’s perspective on sport as a savage, fierce action where r unning, bouncing, and kicking a ball are trial of national ethicalness. Great sportsmanship †genuineness, lowliness, imperturbableness, regard, and thankfulness †is non-existent to Orwell. Orwell’s unscrupulous sentiment outlines how sports are unjustly comprehended by many. Orwell additionally contacts, as I would like to think, on closed-mindedness as opposed to energy. In sports, if a group loses, it is which is as it should be. Disregarding the explanations behind misfortune, and wildly accusing the arbitrator or the conditions is a type of obliviousness that is just appeared by an extremist †an individual who accepts that his nation is the sole best district, stubbornly. Orwell can make the article with one human issue as a center: sport lauds contrasts, it derides adversaries, and disintegrates the ethical character of its adherents.

In this case, it seems that most friendships in The Social Network were never meant to survive; all were meant to crash and burn. For Holden, he basically expects most people to betray him, he expects most people to be ‘phoneys’ and expects all innocence to be lost in most children. Holden constantly feels betrayed with most of the other characters in the story, which coul d definitely be a main cause to his mental problems. Early in the novel, Mr Spencer betrays him. Taking a Look at Intrinsic Motivation - 662 Words

Need: Although there has been countless research done about intrinsic motivation, a lot of it is conflicting when looking at comparisons. Previous studies have looked at the two mechanisms of attribution and perceived competence, as well as the influence of extrinsic rewards on levels of intrinsic motivation. However, they have not directly measured the two variables or focused on reward contingency in multiple aspects in one study. Purpose: The researchers of this experiment sought to clear up certain points, such as the need for direct measures of perceived competence and causal attributions. They also focused on examining the effects of extrinsic rewards that were dependent on ability versus effort, and the effect of extrinsic rewards on increasing or decreasing intrinsic motivation. This is because extrinsic rewards can influence feelings of self-efficacy or how an individual attributes their performance. In addition, since expectancies on internal or external locus of control can affect attribution theory, a measure for locus of control was included in the experiment. Capital assets pricing model and Budgeting Free Sample for Student

Questions: 1.Describe the Capital Asset Pricing Model, Including the Assumptions Underlying the Theory 2.You are Required to work the Following Problem, using a Discounted Cash Flow (NPV) Analysis. You should Model your Answer on the text approach in Chapter Answers: 1.Introduction This essay carries out discussion on the capital assets pricing model (CAPM), which was developed in the early 1960s by the great economist William Sharpe (Fischer and Wermers, 2012). The CAPM mode has been an evolutionary work in the field of finance. It provided analysis of the risk with the expected return of the securities. Analyzing and incorporating the risk of securities with the expected return was a crucial work which was made possible with the evolution of the CAPM model. In this context, this essay provides discussion on the CAPM model with the coverage in depth in regards to relationship between security market line and capital market line. Moreover, the discussion extends to the critique of assumptions of CAPM model. Capital Asset Pricing Model The capital asset pricing model provides for computation of expected return of security or the portfolio of securities. The expected return computed by applying the CAPM model incorporates the risk of the security which is an essential feature of the CAPM model. However, the CAPM model only incorporates the systematic risk because the unsystematic risk is treatable. The expected return by CAPM model is computed by the following formula (Fischer and Wermers, 2012): CAPM= Rf+Beta (Rm-Rf) Where, Rf= Risk free rate of return Rm= Market rate of return Beta = Beta is the measure of systematic risk It could be observed that the model computes the expected return by adding market risk premium multiplied by the beta of security to the risk free rate. Thus, eventually the risk free rate is increased by the premium for the risk taken by the investor (Fischer and Wermers, 2012). The CAPM model is based on certain assumptions as outlined below: The CAPM model assumes that the investors base their decisions in regards to investment only on two factors such as expected return and the risk (Focardi and Fabozzi, 2004). Further, it assumes that the investors are rational and they do not tend to take more risk. The investments made by all the investors are for same time period (Focardi and Fabozzi, 2004). The investors can borrow and lend unlimited amount at the risk free rate. There exists perfect competition in the capital market (Focardi and Fabozzi, 2004). The use of CAPM model has been greatly admired in the field of finance. The investors may use the CAPM model in computing the desired rate of return based on which they may work out the current prices of the securities. Further, the CAMP return could also be used as the discount rate for discounting the cash flows of a project in evaluating its net present value (Sharifzadeh, 2010). Relationship between the Security Market Line and the Capital Market Line There are two elements of the CAPM model such as capital market line and security market line. The capital market line and security market line both are used in finding out the efficient portfolios. However, difference between the two is that CML usages standard deviation to denote the risk while SML usages beta. The capital market line is drawn by taking standard deviation on the X-axes and expected returns on the Y-axes (Cvitanic and Zapatero, 2004). The diagram as shown below depicts the graphical presentation of the CML return: Figure 1: CML Chart (Cvitanic and Zapatero, 2004) From the chart shown above, it could be observed that the efficient frontier on the CML chart is drawn with reference to the expected return and the standard deviation. Thus, the slope of CML becomes: Rm-Rf/ Further, the security market line is nothing but just the graphical representation of the CAPM returns of different securities. The SML is drawn by taking beta of securities on the X-axes and expected returns on the Y-axes. The slope of SML becomes: Rm-Rf/ The graph showing SML return is presented below: Figure 2: SML Presentation (Lee and Su, 2014) The slope of security market line is drawn based on the premise that the systematic risk is the only concern of the investors because the unsystematic risk can be diversified. Therefore, in computing the risk and return trade off, the beta which represents the systematic risk is considered. On the other hand, the risk and return trade off is computed with reference to the standard deviation in the case of CML (Lee and Su, 2014). Arguments for and against the Theory and Critique of its Underlying Assumptions The capital asset pricing model has been applied in the field of finance since many years and it has been considered as one of the most valuable finance theories. The theory establishes a linear relationship between the risk and the return. The proponents of the theory claims that the principles establish in the CAPM theory are still valid (Sharifzadeh, 2010). The theory provides a reasonable estimation of the required rate of return. Further, the proponents claim that the theory takes into account the systematic risk only which is justified because the unsystematic risk can be avoided and hence does not require any consideration. Further, it is claimed that the CAPM model is easy to use and it is widely accepted. The CAPM model provides a strong basis for computation of cost of equity. The proponents of the model claim that the CAPM model is more relevant and better than any other method for computation of cost of equity (Sharifzadeh, 2010).However, there are arguments against the C APM model also. The opponents claim that the CAPM model is based on the unrealistic assumptions. The CAPM model takes into account only the systematic risk assuming that the investors already hold diversified portfolio and hence there does not exist unsystematic risk (Sharifzadeh, 2010). This assumption of the CAPM model does not seem to be valid because it is not possible that in all cases the investor would be holding perfectly diversified portfolios. Further, the CAPM model measures the systematic risk only based on one factor that is relative volatility of the stock to the market index. However, in order to assess the systematic risk in a detailed manner, it is essential to relate it to different factors such as gross domestic product, inflation, and beta. Thus, it is argued that the single factor model as adopted by the CAPM model for risk assessment is not adequate for the purpose; a multifactor model should be adopted (Sharifzadeh, 2010). Alternatives of CAPM The assessment of systematic risk in the CAPM model has been based on the single factor. It has been argued by the economists that measurement of the systematic risk based on the single factor is not appropriate. Therefore, an alternative to the CAPM model has been found out which is known as arbitrage pricing theory (Elton et al., 2009). The arbitrage pricing theory provides for computation of systematic risk based on the multi factor model. It is also called the multi beta model. In this model, the assessment of systematic risk is linked to multiple factors such as GDP, inflation, interest rates, and relative volatility to the market index (Elton et al., 2009). Conclusions The essay presented here covers a critical analysis of the capital asset pricing model. From the discussion in this essay, it has been articulated that the CAPM model provides a good basis for computation of desired rate of return. However, it has also been observed that CAPM model makes many assumptions which might be unrealistic in practical situations. Further, it could be articulated that the CAPM model does not assess the systematic risk appropriately and an alternative for this purpose has been found out as the arbitrage pricing theory (APT). The APT provides a multi factor model for computation of the systematic risk. Formal and Informal Software Development Techniques free essay sample

Compares and contrasts the use of formal methods and informal methods within the software process. This paper investigates the role of formal methods (such as Z, Object-Z, VDM, B) within the software process and compares these to less formal methods such as natural language specifications and semi-formal methods like UML/Fusion. The complexities of formal methods are weighed against the software quality benefits often achieved through their use. Overall cost-effectiveness of both methods are discussed, as well as situations where formal methods may not be required (non-critical applications, rapid prototyping). While it is clear that both formal and informal methods have their own inherent benefits and shortfalls, it seems as though formal methods are the best option if software quality and overall cost-effectiveness are to be maximized. With increased tool support and method standardization, barring personal preference, there are few reasons why a formal approach should not be implemented. Increased acceptance of formal methods would most likely lead to higher quality software due to the more complete and precise specification that mathematical notations allow. The Algonquin Cinderella vs. Tam and Cam Essays

The Algonquin Cinderella vs. Tam and Cam Essays The Algonquin Cinderella vs. Tam and Cam Paper The Algonquin Cinderella vs. Tam and Cam Paper The Algonquin Cinderella vs. Tam and Cam Cinderella is one of the most popular characters in the fairy tales stories. More than fifteen versions of this story exist in different countries. There are two famous versions of this story among adults and children, they are The Algonquin Cinderella (Native Americans version) and Tom and Cam (Vietnameses version). These stories convey the same message that good will always defeat the evil. However, the Algonquin Cinderella and Tom and Cam stories differ in their aspects of belief, magic, and their ending. In the Native American version of Cinderella, the belief in omens beauty and appearance is emphasized. The Cinderella in this story was very small, weak, and often ill. She was treated so harshly by her older sisters. They burnt her hands and her feet with hot cinders without any reason, and it left many scars all over her body. As a result, many people called her the rough faced girl. When she was willing to see the Invisible One, an ideal man for every woman in that village, her sisters and all the people in the village shouted and hooted, hissed and yelled at her. No one could believe that the rough faced girl could see the Invisible One even though she was ugly and had rough face. On the other hand, the belief in the Vietnamese version of the Cinderella story has a big difference with the Native Americans version. In the Vietnamese version, Tam and Cam, Buddha was a form for their belief. In this story, Tam was the Cinderella, and Cam was the stepsister. When Tam had a rough time, Buddha always came to help her. Vietnamese people had known Buddhism since the second century, and it gave a big influence to their culture, especially to their traditional fairy tale stories. In Buddhism, they teach their isciples about karma and reincarnation which is implied in Tam and Cams story. In this story, it showed that Cam died because of her mean behavior; she killed Tam and took her husband. Cam thought by doing all those things, she would live peacefully. However, it did not turn out like she hoped for which is a good example of karma according to Buddhisms doctrine. Reincarnation was also used in this story several times. When Tam was killed by her stepmother and her stepsister, she reincarnated into a vang anh bird, a green thi tree, and into real her form once again. According to the aspect of magic, the magic happened in the Algonquin Cinderella story after the sister of the Invisible One knew that Cinderella was the only girl that could see his brother. She took that rough faced Cinderella home and bathed her. Now, the rough faced girl turned into a very beautiful woman. As she did so, all the scars disappeared from her body. Her hair grew again, as it was combed, long, like a blackbirds wing. Her eyes were now like stars: in all the world there was no other such beauty. (par 28). However, in Tam and Cams version, the magic is slightly different from the Algonquin Cinderella story. In Tam and Cams version, the magic happened by Buddhas help. When Tam was upset that she did not have anything to wear to the festival, Buddha came to her and ask her to open the four Jars that she had buried before. When she opened them, she found a beautiful silk dress, a pair of embroidered shoes, a miniature horse, and a richly ornamented saddle and bridle. The magic also happened when Buddha asked the basketful of unhusked rice. Moreover, the ending of the Algonquin Cinderella story is a happy ending. The Cinderella who used to be a poor little girl and got treated harshly by her sisters turned into a very beautiful woman. She was also able o see the Invisible One because of her pure heart, and she had the opportunity to become his wife. Meanwhile, the Cinderellas sisters were rejected by Invisible Ones sister because they were lying about their sight of seeing her brother. On the other hand, the ending for the Tam and Cams story is different with the Algonquin Cinderella story. The antagonist characters in this Vietnamese version died because of their bad behavior. Cam was killed with the boiling water. Tam also cooked her body into mam with a rich sauce and sent it to her stepmother, saying that was a present from her daughter. par 65). The stepmother died because she was very shocked after she found out that meal was her daughters meat. when the Jar of mam was nearly empty, she saw her daughters skull and fell down dead. (par 67) Thus, the Algonquin Cinderella and Tam and Cam stories share the same message that good always defeat the evil, but they are different in their aspects of belief, magic, and their ending. These two stories have their own unique concepts base on their culture and society from each country, but in some ways, they have the same meaning and lessons as the original story of the Cinderella.

Emotional intelligence (EI) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Emotional intelligence (EI) - Essay Example Comprehending the differences between the two types of leaders is important for all the candidates of leadership and managerial positions. This paper will compare and contrast the transformational and the transactional leader, and explore the leader who connects with his followers more effectively. Discussion Contrast between transactional and transformation leaders The transactional leader is more concerned about maintaining the normal flow of work operations at the work place. On the other hand, the transformational leader extends his roles beyond those of managing the daily operations of the organization, to the levels of crafting the strategies of taking his team, department or company to the next level of success and performance (Hargis, Wyatt & Piotrowski, 2011). This difference is evident from the managerial outlook of the two leaders, because the transactional leader is often emphasizing the disciplinary structure determined by power to push for the completion of the tasks or the job roles available at the organization. The transformational leader is different from the transactional leader, through their managerial outlook, because they offer attention to the grouping of different employees, appealing to the personal zeal to perform and attending to the individual issues that can increase or affect performance (Kotlyar & Karakowsky, 2007). The second difference between the transactional and the transformational leader is that the transactional leader will often use a range of incentives to motivate the improvement of performance from his employees, but will often not pay attention to personal differences or preferences. On the other hand, the transformational leader will boost the performance of his employees through collaborating with employees, building strategic teams, motivating the workers and through appealing to the differences of different workers. Thirdly, the transactional leader equates giving more rewards to the increment of performance. In the case of the transformational leader, performance is boosted through the combination of incentives and setting higher goals for their subordinates, which pushes them to better performance (Hackman & Johnson, 2009). Fourthly, the transformational leader does not envision making his organization a market leader, but a transformational leader will offer his employees opportunities for professional and personal development so that they can push the organization to the level of a market leader. The similarities between transactional and transformational leaders The similarities between the transactional and the transformational leader are that both types of leaders manage to maintain the flow of operations and the completion of job tasks at their organizations. Through ensuring that the daily operations of an organization are met, the transactional leader keeps the organization afloat, while the transformational leader explores newer ways of improving performance. The second similarit y between transactional and transformational leaders is that they use incentives to motivate their employees so that they can perform better. Through the motivation of the subordinates, these two types of leaders are able to cultivate higher performance and to push the organization to higher levels of success, irrespective of the fact that their vision about the future of the organization is not

Interpersonal communication Essay Example for Free

Interpersonal communication Essay The book basically talks about the different ways on how to win friends and become popular. Dale Carnegie gives different tips on how to make different people like you, and how to make others accept and believe in what you are thinking. Carnegie basically makes it easier for readers to understand more effective relationship styles. Carnegie used to teach general public speaking. However, he realized that such wasn’t enough for effective business and felt that his students lacked the skill of simply making friends with new people, which is why he made a book on how to make new friends and other relational issues. Dale Carnegie also felt that he lacked such skills himself. So this is a two way experience for him, both teaching and learning at the same time. Digging in to the deeper purpose of creating such book, the Carnegie Institute of Technology made a study which showed that a financial successful person owes 15 percent to their technical knowledge and the rest to â€Å"skill in human engineering-to personality and the ability to lead people† (Carnegie, 1964). Another reason was that, it is easy to find applicants who had the perfect skills for their jobs- engineering, medicine, accounting, you name it, there are plenty of skilled professionals out there. However, there are not a lot who possess such skills and at the same time have the ability to have effective interpersonal communication and relational skills, which is why Dale Carnegie developed a book which serves as a manual for those who lack such skills. Lastly, there is a need for a book which basically serves as a guide for dummies on how to get other people to like them and how to find more friends. Becoming an effective leader is also a part of what the book teaches, and is what readers will get out of reading it. During the first part of Dale Carnegie’s â€Å"How to Win Friends and Influence People†, he talks about the basic styles and techniques that you can handle people. He basically had three principles in this topic. The first principle is to work with people without criticizing, condemning or complaining. It is important for aspiring leaders to omit such acts because people will not follow a leader who does not listen to what they are saying. The second principle says to â€Å"give honest and sincere appreciation† (Carnegie, 1964). According to Carnegie, flattery is always effective. Of course, everybody wants to feel good. It is so effective in fact that â€Å"Even Queen Victoria was susceptible to flattery† (Carnegie, 1964). However, the negative thing with flattery is that, it is fake and insincere. What Carnegie suggests is for us to give out something positive and honest- which is called appreciation. There is always something positive in everybody, and that is what every effective leader needs to look for. The last principle is to get from other people the â€Å"eager want†. Carnegie mentioned that, we should not talk about what we want, because nobody else will listen to us. Instead, we should talk about something we know others would like to talk about. This will definitely get them interested, especially in doing something for you. Part two of the book discusses the different ways to get people to like you. The first principle tells us to become genuinely interested in other people. Carnegie used his dog as an example or even just dogs generally. They did not study psychology to know how people could like them. They simply liked people genuinely, which is why people liked them back. If you like someone, it becomes almost impossible to resist liking you back. If you genuinely like other people, then you will be welcome anywhere you go (Carnegie, 1964). The next principle is fairly easy and sounds quite simple. However, it is forgotten most of the time, and people forget the magic that it does. One word: Smile. Carnegie mentioned that the smile that people wear on their faces is far more important than what clothes they wear. And the saying â€Å"actions speak louder than words† is very true. Smiles are very important because they say â€Å"I like you, you make me happy. I am glad to see you. † (Carnegie, 1964). This can be proven when babies smile and everybody around them melts. It is the same thing with adults, as long as smiles are genuine. Third principle for people to like you is the simple gesture of remembering the names of the people you meet. It always isn’t a good impression to ask for people’s names the second time around, much more the third. Remembering names are so important in fact that when you â€Å"Remember that name and call it easily, and you have paid a subtle and very effective compliment† (Carnegie, 1964). However, when you forget one name, it will give you a bad impression and will work to your disadvantage. The last three principles of the second part of Carnegie’s work are all connected to each other. First is to â€Å"be a good listener and encourage other to talk about themselves†, next is to talk about the other person’s likes and interests and not talk about you. And the last, is to â€Å"make the other person feel important, sincerely†. These three are very important because if you only care about yourself and talk only about what you feel is interesting, and act like you are the only important person in the world, then no one will want to neither talk nor work with you. In fact, no one will even want to see you. Being egotistic and self centered will not do a person any good in this world. (Carnegie, 1964) Part three of dale Carnegie’s book is How to Win People to Your Way of Thinking. Principle one talks about arguments. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it†, this is what Carnegie (1964) thinks about arguments. This is very true as, while you think you are good in winning arguments, you will never know when you might find someone who is better than you. And people always admire those who walk away from trouble. To sum the third part up, it simply says that you are to respect the way others think, a nd acknowledge their opinions. Even though you do not believe in what they are saying, you must let them speak out, because your opinion is not the only important one. Others should feel like they have a say in things, before they will believe in what you are saying. It is just a matter of reciprocity. â€Å"If we know we are going to be rebuked anyhow, isn’t it far better to beat the other person to it and do it ourselves? † (Carnegie, 1964) It is always good to admit your mistakes. Owning up to your mistakes makes people admire you more, and believe that you are actually human. In the same way that you are never to tell someone that they are wrong just because they do not agree to what you think and they have their own opinions. The first thing that you will need to get from others is respect, and the only way to get that is by showing respect to them first. For the last principles, it just says that in order to get people to believe in the way you think, you must believe in theirs as well. So in conclusion for the third part of the book, it simply means that you have to respect other people’s views, opinions and ideas in order to get them to believe yours as well. Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment. This is the last part of Dale Carnegie’s book. Being a leader is never easy. It may look like the easiest part of a job because you get to tell others to do the job for you. However, more responsibilities come with being a leader, such as all the different decisions that should be made. Carnegie mentions that a leader should develop an attitude that praises and appreciates the people that work for him. Another major thing that leaders should develop is before telling others what they have done wrong, tell something that they have done right first because â€Å"It is always easier to listen to unpleasant things after we have heard some praise of our good points. † (Carnegie, 1964). One more important thing for leaders to do is to â€Å"talk about your mistakes before criticizing the other person† (Carnegie, 1964). This is important, as it will not make the others feel so inferior to you as a leader. Leaders should be more humble than the rest because once superiority complex works its way in, the system will stop working. Becoming an example is another one of the most important things that a leader should follow. Encouragements are also one of the best things to do, most especially after some criticisms. I used to believe that I could communicate to others fairly well. I had a lot of friends and people liked to be around me. But after reading Dale Carnegie’s book, I have realized that I was not that effective and that there are still a lot of areas that I need to improve in. First of all, I criticize, condemn and complain a lot. I lack giving out appreciations as well. Most of the time I am self centered and whenever there are conversations I engage in, I mostly talk about topics that I prefer without even considering whether or not the one I’m conversing with is interested with what we are talking about. I also lack the heart of admitting my mistakes quickly. I sometimes tell people that they’re wrong directly, even just for not sharing the same opinion as I do. I even have the tendency to always get into arguments, even when I have the chance to avoid or get out of it. I am not comfortable in talking about my mistakes as I feel embarrassed and want to bury them in the past. One of the things that I know I am strong at is remembering a person’s name. Carnegie has mentioned that this will make people feel very important, which means I have made a lot of people important already, just by this gesture. Although I talk a lot, I make it a point to let others talk as well. I believe I am a good listener, which makes people look for me when they need someone to talk to. I am very free in giving out encouragements, as long as I feel the people are down in whatever they are doing. Even in the littlest improvement a person makes or adjusts, I notice it and give them praise. I give out constructive criticism as well, and is open to taking some for myself from others. So all in all, I have a lot more to work on, even though I have some positive traits that I already carry with me. Reading on will definitely help me improve in different aspects. I have asked my father, brother and mother to give me a peer analysis in my communication skills and my different ways of dealing with other people. They have more or less the same answers and I will only generalize and summarize the answers that they have given. They have mentioned that I criticize and condemn other people a lot may it be directly or even behind their backs. My brother told me that I judge immediately anything I see that does not pass my so called standards. Carnegie believes that this should be avoided in order to find more people to like you, to have more friends. One thing that they appreciate about me is that I give a lot of encouragements to people. They feel that this is when I am most effective when dealing with people. Even my father told me that he appreciates it when he sees me encourage different people. He also mentioned that he has seen how this affects the different people I am dealing with, and can see the changes that such encouragements have brought about. My mother mentioned that I do not easily admit my mistakes. She said that I even reason out to my actions, even if I already know that what I did was wrong. As much as I hate to admit this, it is nothing but the truth. I find it hard for me to say that I was wrong, mostly because of pride. They all agreed to one thing however, and that is I only like to talk about things that I like, and that I do not even ask them what they want to talk about or what they are interested in. This is one of the things Carnegie has mentioned that should not be around when we want to have more friends or when we want people to like us. Again, I can see that there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to relationships and communication. The first thing that I want to remove from my negative attitude is the inability to admit when I am wrong or I have made a mistake. I think this is the first thing that would turn other people off from wanting to talk or become friends. I believe for me to be able to do this, I must lower down my pride. This will not be easy, and will take a lot of time. But if I want to improve my lifestyle, then this will definitely have to be the first thing off my negative list. The next thing I must make a move on is towards removing the act of always criticizing other people. It has almost become automatic for me to do this, as I easily judge people even at the first look or impression. This has cost me a lot of friends and friendships that might have started. I think the way to start taking this negative act from me is by always thinking positively and giving other people a chance- a chance to show their true selves. Being judgmental has always been a problem and will be a bigger problem if I do not act up on it immediately. Being less self centered and egotistic will be very important if I want to start new and stronger relationships with other people. These are only some of the things that I think I need to change. Dale Carnegie has helped me realize a lot of things. His work has definitely taught me a lot of things; things that are essential in day to day living. After all, no one can live alone. Friends and relationships with people will help us live more harmoniously and Dale Carnegie’s â€Å"How to Win Friends and Influence People† has taught me how I can have more friends and develop friends a lot easier.

The Theme of Courage in Red Badge of Courage :: Red Badge Courage Essays

The Theme of Courage in Red Badge of Courage The Red Badge of Courage is a fictional psychological portrait of a young soldier named Henry Fleming, tracing the thread of his emotions and reactions to events that transpire during an unnamed battle of the Civil War (spark notes). Henry is an average farmer from New York. Henry wants to go to war and become a hero like the one he read about in his school. The story starts off with everyone sitting in regiment camp by the river with rumors flowing around. While everyone is thinking about what they will do in war, Henry was thinking of how is he going to react when he goes to the battlefields. How would he react if he was to die? He said, no matter what happens he will not run from a fight. Two of the other guys in the army had about the same courage as Henry, but none of them ever said that they will not run away. Before he can go on to fight in battle, the army puts him in a battle to see if he runs away from fight or not. Southwestern University

Operations Analysis Week 7Case Study 2:   Southwestern University A. See the Case Studies Assignment Rubric in Doc Sharing for assignment details. Complete the  three questions at the end of the case on page 95.Case Studies Southwestern University: (A)*Southwestern University (SWU), a large state college in Stephenville, Texas, 30 miles southwest of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, enrolls close to 20,000 students. In a typical town-gown relationship, the school is a dominant force in the small city, with more students during fall and spring than permanent residents.A longtime football powerhouse, SWU is a member of the Big Eleven conference and is usually in the top 20 in college football rankings. To bolster its chances of reaching the elusive and long-desired number-one ranking, in 2003, SWU hired the legendary Bo Pitterno as its head coach. One of Pitterno’s demands on joining SWU had been a new stadium. With attendance increasing, SWU administrators began to face the i ssue head-on. After 6 months of study, much political arm wrestling, and some serious financial analysis, Dr. Joel Wisner, president of Southwestern University, had reached a decision to expand the capacity at its on-campus stadium. This integrated study runs throughout the text. Other issues facing Southwestern’s football expansion include (B) forecasting game attendance (Chapter 4); (C) quality of facilities (Chapter 6); (D) break-even analysis for food services (Supplement 7 Web site); (E) location of the new stadium (Chapter 8 Web site); (F) inventory planning of football programs (Chapter 12 Web site); and (G) scheduling of campus security officers/staff for game days (Chapter 13).Adding thousands of seats, including dozens of luxury skyboxes, would not please everyone. The influential Pitterno had argued the need for a irst-class stadium, one with built-in dormitory rooms for his players and a palatial office appropriate for the coach of a future NCAA champion team. But the decision was made, and everyone, including the coach, would learn to live with it.TABLE 3. 6 Southwestern University Project Time Estimates (days) ActivityDescription Predecessor(s) OptimisticMost LikelyPessimisticCrash Cost/Day ABonding, insurance, tax structuring—203040$1,500 BFoundation, concrete footings for boxesA2065803,500 CUpgrading skybox stadium seatingA50601004,000 DUpgrading walkways, stairwells, elevatorsC30501001,900EInterior wiring, lathesB2530359,500 FInspection approvalsE0. 10. 10. 10 GPlumbingD, F2530352,500 HPaintingG1020302,000 IHardware/AC/metal workingsH2025602,000 JTile/carpet/windowsH810126,000 KInspectionJ0. 10. 10. 10 LFinal detail work/cleanup, K2025604,500The job now was to get construction going immediately after the 2009 season ended. This would allow exactly 270 days until the 2010 season opening game. The contractor, Hill Construction (Bob Hill being an alumnus, of course), signed his contract. Bob Hill looked at the tasks his engineers had outlined and looked President Wisner in the eye.I guarantee the team will be able to take the field on schedule next year,† he said with a sense of confidence. â€Å"I sure hope so,† replied Wisner. â€Å"The contract penalty of $10,000 per day for running late is nothing compared to what Coach Pitterno will do to you if our opening game with Penn State is delayed or canceled. † Hill, sweating slightly, did not need to respond. In football-crazy Texas, Hill Construction would be mud if the 270-day target was missed. Back in his office, Hill again reviewed the data (see Table 3. 6) and noted that optimistic time estimates can be used as crash times. He then gathered his foremen. â€Å"Folks, if we’re not 75% sure we’ll finish this stadium in less than 270 days, I want this project crashed! Use of Symbols and Foreshadowing in Steinbecks Of Mice...

In the novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck chooses to use many different and unique symbols in order to help develop characters and to foreshadow upcoming events. The symbols used in this story give it a more effective message and provide a better understanding to what Steinbeck has intended to convey. He uses many different forms of symbolism, some which are objects while some are actual human relationships, in order to make the story more realistic and to give it a more insightful approach. Steinbeck uses both big and small symbols in order to help illustrate objects or people in the book. The first major use of symbolism that Steinbeck chooses to use is linked with the setting of the first scene. The book starts out with the†¦show more content†¦The major importance that Steinbeck puts on the riverbank also foreshadows more events to come. George repeatedly tells Lennie that if he ever gets in trouble while at the ranch to come back to the riverbank and wait for George to come back for him. George telling Lennie this so many times foreshadows that something bad will happen and that he will have to return here. Steinbeck chose to have this as the setting of both the beginning and the ending because he wanted to focus on George and Lennie’s friendship throughout the book. This occurs because they are the only two people in both the first and the last scene. Near the Salinas riverbank Steinbeck also incorporates a large sycamore tree. The symbol that he is trying to link with the sycamore tree is involved with the Garden of Eden. In the center of the Garden of Eden there is a large tree known to be the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Steinbeck links the two together in order to help foreshadow the good and evil events to come in the story. The sycamore tree is part of George and Lennie’s safe place they can go to, but tragically ends with the death of Lennie here at the riverbank. Another symbol that Steinbeck uses is the dream farm combined with George and Lennie’s friendship. Their dream farm is what ties the two together throughout the whole story. It is what keeps them working together, through thick and thin. The two think of their dream farm as theirShow MoreRelatedLiterary Comparison of of Mice and Men, the Pearl, and Cannery Row2335 Words   |  10 PagesEnglish II 2 May 2013 I Pledge John Steinbeck’s Literary Style John Steinbeck is an author who wrote in the early 1900s that makes use of setting, characterization, theme, irony, foreshadowing, and symbolism in his many novels.
